Frequently Asked Questions
Café Madre is a UK-based specialty coffee business offering small-batch, ethically sourced coffee grown by women farmers. We focus on spotlighting the incredible work of women throughout the supply chain, and working with cooperatives that support our values.
We’re building relationships with women producers worldwide to bring you coffees that are both exceptional in quality and impact.
Café Madre is a for-profit business with a selective sourcing model. We are selective in which coffees we source to ensure they meet our high standards.
Currently, we supply two coffees from worker-led cooperatives. Primavera from Union Proagro via the pioneering Café Femenino, and Tierra Madre from a subset of women farmers a Aldea Asociasion Global.
We only work with co-ops and producers who:
Prioritise fair pay and economic empowerment for women
Reinvest in their communities
Meet high quality standards
Offer traceability and transparency
We work with our suppliers to provide up-to-date information about our coffees and the communities that produce them.
We work exclusively with producers who use sustainable and ethical growing practices, and as a result, many of the cooperatives we work with have acheived Organic or Fair trade certification for their coffees.
As of yet, we as the final producer have not yet completed all requirements neccesary to provide you with these certificates at the point of sale - but the product is still the same. We try to list the certifications that the cooperatives have achieved for each batch on the product page.
If seeing these accreditations is important to you, please let us know via our contact page!
Café Madre is UK-based and we do not farm coffee ourselves. We source from cooperatives that champion women farmers, or in some cases from individual women farmers. Our role is to amplify their stories, ensure they receive fair payment, and bring their coffees to conscious consumers in the UK and beyond.
We prioritise transparency and traceability at every step, sharing updates, stories, and visuals directly from the cooperatives we work with, so you can see the people and places behind each cup. It’s coffee with context, connection, and impact.
Yes — we’re proudly women-founded and led.
No — Café Madre is UK-based and not Latin-owned.
We work with worker-led cooperatives in our coffees countries of origin. We often stock at least one coffee from Latin America.
“Café Madre” roughly translates to “Mother Coffee” in Spanish. The name pays homage to the role of women in their communities, especially in coffee-growing regions where their social and economic contributions can be overlooked.
The name is also a nod to where Café Madre began, as our first two coffees (Tierra Madre and Primavera) were sourced from Spanish-speaking Bolivia and Nicaragua.
Great question! We are building a network of likeminded coffee shops and retailers where you will be able to find our products.
For now, you can find Café Madre at:
The Village Greengrocers, Charlton, London - In bags
St. Richard's Church Centre, Charlton, London - Served in the café
Garden Fruit Organic Grocer, Eltham, London - El Bombo, in bags
If you are with an organisation that is interested in stocking Café Madre, or would like to suggest somewhere you think we'd fit in, please let us by emailing hello@cafemadre.co.uk.
